Celebrities Who Started Their Careers Very Young

Some celebrities seem like they have been famous forever. Long before they appeared on major stages, blockbuster movies, or award shows, they were already working in entertainment as children or teenagers. Starting young can give performers years of experience, but it also means growing up under public attention.

1. Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore began acting when she was extremely young and became internationally recognizable as a child star after appearing in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982.

She was only six years old when she played Gertie in the famous Steven Spielberg film. Her performance immediately made her one of Hollywood’s most recognizable young actors.

Barrymore came from a family with a long history in entertainment, so acting was introduced to her at an exceptionally early age. Her childhood, however, was very different from that of most children because she was already dealing with intense public attention.

Instead of remaining known only as a child performer, Barrymore eventually rebuilt her career as an adult actress and producer. She later became known for films including The Wedding Singer, Never Been Kissed, and Charlie’s Angels.

2. Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio began working professionally as a performer while he was still very young.

He appeared in television commercials and later landed roles in television programs during his teenage years. One of his early notable appearances was on the sitcom Growing Pains, where he joined the cast as a teenager.

His early work eventually led to more serious film roles. By the time he appeared in movies such as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, he had already developed substantial experience as a young actor.

DiCaprio’s career changed dramatically when he starred in Titanic in 1997. The movie turned him into a global superstar almost overnight.

What makes his career particularly interesting is that his early start allowed him to build acting experience before becoming one of the biggest names in Hollywood. He later established himself through critically acclaimed roles and became an Academy Award-winning actor.

3. Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman began her acting career while still a child.

She became widely known after playing Mathilda in Léon: The Professional, released in 1994. Portman was only 12 years old when the film was released, making the performance an early milestone in her career.

Her success as a young actor was followed by appearances in major films, including the Star Wars prequel trilogy, where she played Padmé Amidala.

Unlike some child stars who remain focused entirely on entertainment, Portman also pursued higher education. She attended Harvard University while continuing to work as an actress.

Her career eventually expanded beyond acting. She became an Academy Award-winning performer and also worked as a producer and filmmaker.

Her early start gave her decades of professional experience while she was still relatively young.

4. Macaulay Culkin

Macaulay Culkin began acting as a child and became one of the most recognizable young stars of the 1990s.

His breakthrough came with Home Alone in 1990, when he played Kevin McCallister. He was only 10 years old when the film was released.

The movie became a massive commercial success, and Culkin quickly became one of the most famous child actors in the world. He returned as Kevin in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

His early fame was extraordinary. At a very young age, he was already receiving the level of attention normally associated with established adult movie stars.

Culkin later stepped away from acting for periods of time before eventually returning to entertainment.

His career remains one of the most recognizable examples of a child performer becoming a major Hollywood star almost overnight.

5. Zendaya

Zendaya entered professional entertainment at a young age, initially building her career through Disney Channel programming.

She became widely known as a teenager when she starred in Shake It Up, which premiered in 2010. The show gave her a large young audience and helped establish her as a television performer.

She later expanded into music, film, fashion, and major television productions.

Her transition from a Disney Channel star to a highly respected adult performer was particularly significant. She eventually took on major roles in productions such as Spider-Man, Dune, and Euphoria.

Her career demonstrates how a performer can begin in children’s entertainment and gradually develop a much broader professional identity.

Rather than being defined by her early television work, Zendaya successfully moved into major film and dramatic roles.

6. Jodie Foster

Jodie Foster started appearing in television commercials when she was only a child.

Her early career developed quickly, and she began appearing in television programs and films while still very young.

One of her most famous childhood performances came in Taxi Driver, released in 1976. Foster was only 12 years old when she played Iris, a role that attracted significant attention and demonstrated her ability to handle serious dramatic material.

Her career continued well beyond childhood. She eventually became an Academy Award-winning actress and later established herself as a director and producer.

Foster’s long career is especially notable because she successfully moved from child performer to respected adult filmmaker.

She began working in entertainment at an age when most children were still completely outside the professional world.

7. Shirley Temple

Shirley Temple became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood while she was still a young child.

She began appearing in short films as a very young performer and quickly became famous for her singing, dancing, and acting abilities.

During the 1930s, Temple became one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world. Her films were enormously popular, and her image became closely associated with the optimism and escapism of Depression-era Hollywood.

Her success was extraordinary considering how young she was when she reached international fame.

Temple eventually moved away from acting and pursued a different career in public service. She later became a diplomat and served as a U.S. ambassador.

Her story is unusual because she did not simply remain in entertainment throughout her life. She became famous as a child and later built an entirely different professional identity as an adult.
